Are you an experienced engineer who enjoys creating incredibly useful tools? Do you want to help guide a large open source community into the future by building intuitive, easy to use WordPress themes, plugins, and Blocks?

As a member of the StudioPress team at WP Engine, you’ll do meaningful work that helps people easily create a web presence for themselves (or their clients) on WordPress. You’ll work side by side with the other engineers on our team, as well as the product and marketing teams, to squash bugs, build useful features, and create new products that will help delight WordPress agencies, freelancers, and DIY users. You’ll have ample opportunity to learn and grow, while you take on the challenging work of serving a large and active open source community.

Day to Day:

• Create custom Genesis child themes, while adhering to our standard of excellence, perhaps even raising that standard even higher!
• Update existing child themes for integration with the latest WordPress, Genesis, and Atomic Blocks features.
• Building and maintaining custom WordPress plugins that extend the functionality of WordPress and Genesis, solving common user problems.
• Building and maintaining custom blocks for use with the Gutenberg editor.
• Ideating, creating, and iterating on future tools that will help the Genesis community navigate the changing world of WordPress.

Ideal Candidate:

Because we want to build tools that help our users effortlessly create sites on WordPress 5.0+, the ideal candidate for this position would have some experience building Blocks for the Gutenberg editor, including an understanding of the Gutenberg specific implementation of ReactJS, the tooling necessary to create using modern JavaScript, and extending/utilizing the WordPress core React components in order to create custom Gutenberg blocks.

In addition, strong candidates would also have experience in some combination of the following:

• Git/Github version control
• CI/CD for testing and deploying
• Scrum or other Agile project management workflows
• Building and maintaining WordPress themes and plugins
• Genesis Framework (child themes or plugins)

Listening & Organization

Because you will be working with a team of other software engineers and stakeholders, as well as the open-source community, strong listening and communication skills are a must-have. We mostly chat in Slack, but you’ll also be expected to participate in video conferences like daily standup meetings and other Scrum ceremonies. Adherence to the team coding standards, along with documenting your code, are essential for reducing friction between team members. And of course, be nice! Empathy is key. Respect for your coworkers and customers is essential for success in this role, but it’s also the right thing to do!
