HR Directions seeks a candidate for its client, RTI International, for a Qualitative Data Analyst within the the Food, Nutrition, and Obesity Policy Research group. The group conducts research in the U.S. and globally on maternal and child nutrition, food safety, food waste, and food policies. We use a variety of methods ranging from randomized impact evaluations, mixed methods, and qualitative data collection. RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion. Through this program, interns will become accustomed to RTI's open and educational culture, support RTI's mission to improve the human condition, and build upon career goals and grow. The selected intern will assist with qualitative coding and analysis as part of the endline of the Alive & Thrive Nigeria impact evaluation. The goal of the project is to measure the impact of Alive & Thrive's activities on infant and young child feeding behaviors through household surveys. The qualitative data will be used to provide context to the survey findings.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of codebooks for mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and stakeholders
  • Coding transcripts in Dedoose
  • Identifying key themes in the data
  • Developing data matrices and populate them with quotes using code reports from Dedoose
  • Contributing to a final report and/or peer-reviewed paper
Additional Information This paid internship, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, will take place from April 2020 through July 2020.
The internship requires a minimum commitment of 15 per week, not to exceed 40 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday). Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as a PhD student in nutrition
  • Demonstrated knowledge of qualitative research methods
  • Experience using Dedoose software or similar
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be based in North Carolina and willing and able to work from the RTP, NC office for the duration of the internship.
