Resume Examples and Guide For

Accounting

Sections

An accounting resume works the way a good set of books does: every number ties to something real, and nothing floats unexplained. This page collects examples from staff accountant to accounting manager, one built from resumes that reached real interviews, and shows what the posting data says about the resumes that got read.

Huntr tracks 620 accountant resumes, and the lead example is an anonymized composite of the ones that reached interviews. The verified set is made from actual resumes rather than a template. It draws on our broader research. Names, employers, and schools are swapped so no example is a real person, and the role-by-role examples below are labeled and built on what 1,288 real accountant postings actually ask for.

What Accounting Resumes That Reached Interviews Had in Common

The posting figures below come from 1,288 accountant job listings on Huntr. The cohort figures come from 11 resumes that reached accountant interviews. We scope every claim to its source.

  • The longest history still got read. One person in the interview cohort listed eight job titles across a long run, from full-charge bookkeeper to audit senior to financial accountant. The resume that reached interviews did not hide the climb. It reconciled it, role by role.
  • Excel still runs the desk. It shows up in 49% of the 1,288 accountant postings we pulled, ahead of every named ERP. List it, then show what you did in it.
  • Soft skills show up as hard numbers. Attention to detail (32%), communication (31%), and organizational skills (21%) all outrank most tools. In accounting, detail is not a personality trait. It is a control.
  • Financial reporting leads the technical skills. It tops them at 32%, with budgeting at 16% and financial analysis at 15% close behind. The postings want the full close, not one slice of it.
  • Name the standard you close under. GAAP shows up in about 9.5% of postings and IFRS in 6.4%. A hiring manager reads a named standard as risk lowered.
  • No single ERP owns the field. SAP (6.4%), NetSuite (5.4%), QuickBooks (6.9%), and Xero (3.5%) split it. Put the system you ran in the skills band, not a wish list of five.
  • The subledger words carry weight. Accounts payable (10%), accounts receivable (7.6%), and general ledger (4.0%) all appear. If you own the close, say which accounts you tie out.
  • Every resume opened with a summary. In this interview cohort the median history ran to eight titles. Long careers do not need trimming to one page. They need ordering, so the numbers reconcile down the page.

Accounting Resume Example That Reached Interviews

This composite mirrors real accountant resumes from the interview set above. The name, employers, and school are swapped for comparable real ones; the interview companies named are real.

Skills for an Accounting Resume

We counted the skills across 1,288 real accountant postings on Huntr. Pick from what employers actually ask for, then keep only what the specific job description names.

Core: Excel (49% of postings), financial reporting (32%), attention to detail (32%), communication (31%), analytical skills (26%), general accounting (25%), organizational skills (21%), budgeting (16%), financial analysis (15%).

Close and controls: accounts payable (10%), GAAP (9.5%), accounts receivable (7.6%), variance analysis (6.4%), IFRS (6.4%), reconciliation (4.4%), general ledger (4.0%). Name the subledgers you actually own.

Tools: Excel first, then the system you ran: QuickBooks (6.9%), SAP (6.4%), NetSuite (5.4%), Xero (3.5%). List the one platform you know cold, not five you have touched once.

How to use this: Postings screen on exact strings, so GAAP, NetSuite, and accounts receivable have to appear as written. Mix a few core skills, the close vocabulary, and one real tool. A skills list with tools but no close terms, or close terms but no tool, reads half-reconciled.

Action Verbs for Accounting Resumes

Close: reconciled, closed, posted, accrued, tied out. Use these where a count or a day can follow: closed a $180M division by day 4; reconciled 22 balance-sheet accounts monthly.

Control: audited, reviewed, corrected, recovered, abated. These carry authority: recovered $42K in duplicate payments; abated $210K in proposed penalties.

Improve: automated, standardized, cut, rebuilt, migrated. Pair with a result: cut the close from 9 days to 5; automated 78 report templates in Excel.

The weak version of an accounting bullet starts with responsible for. The strong version starts with what you closed or caught and ends with a number that ties out.

Turn a Weak Accounting Bullet Into a Strong One

Weak

Responsible for month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting for the company.

Strong

Closed the books for a $180M revenue division by day 4, reconciled 22 balance-sheet accounts each month, and cleared two external audits with no adjusting entries.

Same job, different evidence. The strong bullet answers what a hiring manager in accounting actually asks: how big, how fast, and did it survive the audit.

Accountant vs Controller on a Resume

Scope: an accountant owns the transactions and the close for one book; a controller owns the whole accounting function, the controls, and the reporting the executives sign. Metrics: accountant resumes prove clean, on-time closes and tied-out reconciliations; controller resumes prove faster company-wide closes, audit outcomes, and process built. Narrative: if your bullets show you setting the close calendar, building the controls, and growing the accountants under you, a controller title may fit the work better than the one you have.

Get an Accounting Resume Read by the Screeners First

The screener matches strings before a hiring manager ever sees the page. Keep the title standard (Staff Accountant, not Numbers Ninja), name the standard you close under (GAAP, IFRS), and mirror the posting's exact skill names, since NetSuite and accounts receivable are literal matches, not concepts. Run the posting through Huntr's keyword scanner to see the terms you are missing, then let Resume Tailor write the match into your bullets. In our data, tailored resumes reach interviews at about 5.8%, roughly 1.6 times the rate of generic ones. When the page is clean, prep for the conversation with our accounting interview questions.

Accounting Resume FAQ

How long should an accounting resume be?

Two pages is fine, and often right. In our interview cohort the median resume ran about two pages, with a median of eight job titles, and several ran longer. Order the roles so the numbers reconcile top to bottom. Do not cut a real close or a real audit to hit a page count.

Do you need a CPA to get accounting interviews?

Not for every seat. The interview cohort here skewed toward chartered credentials like ACCA and CA, plus tool badges, rather than the CPA. A CPA helps and it is worth pursuing, but clean close numbers and named standards carry a resume that has not finished the exam.

What skills should an accountant put on a resume?

Start from the posting. Across 1,288 accountant listings the constants are Excel (49%), financial reporting (32%), attention to detail (32%), and communication (31%), with GAAP, reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, and one ERP right behind. Name the tool you actually ran and the standard you close under.

How do I write an accounting resume with a long, mixed history?

Reconcile it, do not hide it. One person in this cohort listed eight titles from bookkeeper to audit senior and still reached interviews. Keep every role, but lead each with a number: a book size, a close day, a reconciliation count. The climb reads as depth when the figures line up.

Methodology

The verified example is a composite of real resumes attached to jobs that reached the interview stage for accounting roles on Huntr, drawn from 11 resumes. We swap names, employers, and schools for comparable real ones and check every swap against our database so no example points to a person. Where figures come from one resume we shift them to nearby values; the interview and offer companies we name are real and unchanged. We scope those claims to this section rather than to accounting at large.

The role-by-role examples are illustrative, marked on every callout. They make no interview claim. Their skills come from the 1,288 accountant postings cited above, and their shape follows what the verified example does: one scope figure in the summary, a number in every bullet, and the tools an accounting employer would recognize.

Conclusion

Across the accounting resumes that reached interviews, one habit held: the numbers reconciled. A scope figure up top, a book size or a close day in every role, the standard named, the tool named the way the posting names it, and a length that respected a long career instead of fighting it. None of it required a perfect pedigree or a finished CPA. It required a resume that ties out.
