Resume Examples and Guide For

CNA

Sections

Certified nursing assistants are the hands-on core of patient care, and a CNA resume has to prove two things fast: that you hold a current certification and that you can be trusted at the bedside. The examples below are part of Huntr's library of real resume examples, each one built from actual CNA and patient care job postings and the skills those employers ask for. For the skills to list, see our CNA resume skills guide.

Every example here is illustrative and anonymized. We ground each one in the certified nursing assistant and patient care technician postings tracked in Huntr's database, then Sam Wright reviews it against what actually gets read in healthcare hiring. Our broader research covers 1.7 million applications and 243,000 resumes, so the patterns behind these examples come from real hiring, not guesswork.

What CNA Job Postings Ask For Most

Before you write a line, look at what these employers actually list. Across the CNA and patient care postings in Huntr's database that spell out required skills, a few patterns repeat, and they should shape the top third of your resume.

  • Patient care leads almost every posting. Of the 32 CNA and patient care postings that list required skills, 21 name patient care itself, ahead of any tool or credential. Say it plainly and back it with numbers.
  • Communication is the second must-have. 16 of those postings ask for communication and 5 more name interpersonal skills, a reminder that nurses and families read your updates as closely as your charting.
  • Teamwork outranks any single procedure. 12 postings name teamwork outright. The aide who keeps a hall running with the nurses is the one who gets called back.
  • Vitals and infection control are the named hard skills. 6 postings ask for vital signs monitoring and 5 for infection control, the two technical lines a CNA resume should never bury.
  • Most CNA jobs hire on certification, not years. The 38 postings that use the CNA or certified nursing assistant title ask for a current state certificate and BLS, which is why a strong first resume can compete on training and clinicals alone.

Entry-Level and Career-Change CNA Resume Examples

A first CNA resume competes on training, clinicals, and attitude. These four show how to open a career, whether you are brand new, fresh out of a program, or arriving from another job.

CNA Resume With No Experience

Illustrative example

Built from the 32 postings in this set that list their required skills up front, the no-experience route where training, clinicals, and volunteering stand in for a work history, down to the senior-center floor a trainee showed up for every Saturday.

Skills

What it shows: A first-time aide can compete on training and attitude alone. This example keeps the focus on 120 clinical hours, volunteer caregiving, and reliability rather than a job history it does not have. See the methodology for how these examples are built.

The summary: An objective, not a summary, states the certification and the 120 hours of clinical training first, so a reader sees the credential before the thin work history.

The experience: Volunteer caregiving for 15-20 residents does the work a paid role would: safe transfers, reporting changes, infection routines. The retail job earns its place as proof of patience under pressure.

The skills: ADLs, vital signs, and infection control lead, matching the skills the entry-level postings name, with compassion and communication close behind.

What it shows: Fresh out of a program, this resume leans on clinical placement and certifications to stand in for paid experience.

The summary: A short objective names the CNA credential and BLS and points at the goal, which is the right move when the work history is a single student rotation.

The experience: The student CNA placement at Chicago General shows real numbers already: 10-15 patients per shift, accurate vitals, infection control practiced on the floor.

The skills: Patient care, vital signs, and communication lead, the exact skills entry postings ask for, with empathy and time management rounding it out.

What it shows: Two clinical rotations in different settings let a new CNA show range before their first paid shift.

The summary: The summary frames diverse clinical experience across settings, which reads as breadth rather than a gap.

The experience: Two student placements, a hospital med-surg unit and a senior living center, cover 8-10 patients per shift, vitals, and mobility, so the range is concrete.

The skills: Patient assessment, wound care assistance, and EHR sit alongside cultural sensitivity, matching what teaching hospitals list.

The experience: Recent clinical experience at Evergreen Medical Center anchors the CNA claim; the prior customer service role proves communication, records, and an Employee of the Month award.

Skills That Match CNA Job Postings

The generic skills list is a start, but the strongest resumes mirror what the postings actually name. Group your skills so a reader and an applicant tracking system both find them fast.

Core clinical skills: patient care, named in 21 of the 32 postings that list required skills, plus vital signs monitoring (6 postings) and infection control (5), then role-specific lines like catheter care, wound care, phlebotomy, or range-of-motion work.

Tools and systems: the electronic health records these employers run, including Epic, Cerner, PointClickCare, and MatrixCare, plus eMAR for medication-aide roles. Name the ones you have used.

Soft skills that carry weight: communication (16 postings), teamwork (12), interpersonal skills (5), and flexibility (7). List them, but prove them in your bullets too.

Action Verbs for CNA Resumes

Strong bullets open with a verb that shows the care you gave, not the duty you were assigned. Rotate these so no two lines start the same way.

Direct care: assisted, bathed, repositioned, transferred, fed, ambulated, toileted, groomed.

Monitoring and charting: measured, recorded, charted, observed, reported, flagged, documented.

Teamwork and safety: collaborated, escalated, mentored, trained, sanitized, prevented.

Trade a flat line like "responsible for patient care" for "assisted 10-12 patients per shift with bathing, feeding, and mobility while charting vitals every four hours." The second one a hiring manager can picture.

CNA vs LPN: What Changes on the Resume

If you are moving from CNA toward LPN or RN, the resume changes in three ways, and knowing them helps you write the CNA version well now.

Scope: a CNA resume centers on daily care, comfort, and observation; an LPN resume adds medication administration, treatments, and clinical judgment under an RN.

Numbers: CNAs quantify patient loads, safety gains, and satisfaction; LPNs add clinical outcomes, med passes, and supervision of aides.

Narrative: a CNA resume proves reliability and bedside skill, the foundation a nursing program and a first LPN employer look for, so make those unmistakable.

Get Your CNA Resume Past the Screeners

Most hospitals and care networks run resumes through an applicant tracking system before a person reads them. Use the posting's exact words, so write certified nursing assistant if the posting does, not just CNA, and put your state certification and BLS near the top. Keep the layout simple, with clear headings and no tables buried in columns. Run the job description and your resume through Huntr's keyword scanner to catch missing terms, then tailor each version to the job in front of you.

Methodology

Every example on this page is illustrative. Each one is built from the real certified nursing assistant and patient care postings tracked in Huntr's database, the skills those employers name, and the patterns we see in strong healthcare resumes. Names, contact details, employers, and schools are invented, and the numbers are realistic rather than copied from any one person's file.

Huntr's research base runs well beyond this one role: 1.7 million applications and 243,000 resumes analyzed, described in our annual research report. When we build an example, we anchor it to what real postings ask for so the resume reads the way a hiring manager expects, then label it clearly as a guide to learn from, not a template to copy word for word.

Conclusion

The strongest CNA resumes do the same few things. They lead with the certification and BLS a posting requires, they turn daily tasks into specific bullets with patient counts and outcomes, and they name the setting and specialty the job actually needs. Whether you are writing your first resume or moving into dialysis, memory care, or a team-lead role, match the posting in front of you and let your care show in the details.

Start with Huntr's resume builder, tailor each version with the resume tailor, and check it against the job with the keyword scanner.
