Resume Examples and Guide For

Manual Tester

Sections

Manual testers are the last read before software ships: the test cases you run by hand, the defects you catch, and the edge cases automation misses. These manual tester resume examples show what that looks like on the page. The two lead examples are composites of real QA resumes that reached the interview stage, followed by illustrative examples by level and specialty, built on what our data and live job postings reward. Start with the one closest to your situation, then tailor it to the job you want. For the cross-role set, see our real resumes.

This page is built from the manual tester and QA resumes in Huntr's database, not from generic advice. Our research team studies the job search at scale, and these examples were reviewed by Rennie Haylock on Huntr's content team. The two verified examples at the top are drawn from real QA resumes that reached the interview stage at companies like Pearson, Robert Half, and Datavant. Names, employers, and schools are swapped for comparable real ones and the figures nudged so no example traces to a real person. The illustrative examples below are built from those same interview-stage patterns and from what live manual testing postings ask for.

What Manual Tester Resumes That Reached Interviews Had in Common

Across the 14 QA and manual tester resumes in our data that reached the interview stage, plus the skills named in 6,397 live manual testing postings, a few patterns held. Read the resume traits as worked examples; the posting counts sit on the far larger base.

  • Most did not start in QA. A classroom teacher, a pharmacovigilance pharmacist, a biomedical engineer, and a life-sciences validation lead were among the paths in. The resume's job is to make the pivot into testing read as obvious.
  • They led with a summary and one number. Almost every resume opened with years, a specialty, and a single metric, a defect reduction or a coverage figure, then let the test work carry the rest.
  • Manual testing sits on a base of process, not just tools. Test plans (507 postings), test cases (383), and manual testing itself (1,641) anchor the set. Name the process, then prove it with a defect or a release you protected.
  • Agile is the default working method. Agile appears in more than 1,100 of the postings we read, ahead of any single tool. A resume that never mentions sprints, ceremonies, or acceptance criteria reads dated.
  • Certifications carry weight, ISTQB most of all. ISTQB Foundation and Advanced appeared again and again across the interview-stage resumes, the way a cert credentials a tester when the degree is in another field.
  • The tools cluster and split by stack. SQL (1,509 postings), Selenium (1,319), Jira (1,503 counting JIRA), and Postman (670) show up most. Pick the ones your target postings actually name.

Manual Tester Resume Examples That Reached the Interview Stage

These two examples are verified. Each is a composite of the QA and manual tester resumes in our data that reached the interview stage, anonymized and figure-adjusted. The examples further down are illustrative, built from live manual testing postings and the patterns our data rewards.

How to Write a Manual Tester Resume

Manual Tester Resume Outline

A well-structured manual tester resume should include the following sections:

  • Contact Information
  • Professional Summary or Objective
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Skills
  • Certifications
  • Additional Sections (e.g., Projects, Languages, Professional Memberships)

Which Resume Layout Should a Manual Tester Use?

For manual testers, a reverse-chronological resume layout is typically the most effective. This format highlights your most recent and relevant experience first, which is crucial in the fast-paced tech industry. However, if you're changing careers or have limited experience, a combination resume that emphasizes your skills alongside your work history might be more appropriate.

What Your Manual Tester Resume Header Should Include

Your manual tester resume header should include essential contact information to make it easy for potential employers to reach you. Here are some examples:

John Doe

[email protected] - (555) 123-4567 - Austin, TX - linkedin.com/in/example

Why it works

• Full name is clearly visible and professional • Location includes city and state, providing enough information without being too specific • Phone number is formatted for easy readability • Email address is professional and doesn't include nicknames • LinkedIn profile is included, offering additional professional information

Johnny D.

[email protected]

Bad example

• Uses a nickname instead of full professional name • Missing location information • No phone number provided • Email address is unprofessional and may be off-putting to employers • Lacks LinkedIn profile, missing an opportunity to showcase professional network and additional information

What Your Manual Tester Resume Summary Should Include

Your resume summary should concisely highlight your experience, key skills, and notable achievements as a manual tester. It should be tailored to the specific job you're applying for and demonstrate your value to potential employers.

How Long Should I Make My Manual Tester Resume?

The ideal length for a manual tester resume is typically one to two pages. For entry-level positions or those with less than 10 years of experience, aim for a single page. More experienced testers can extend to two pages if necessary to showcase relevant experience and achievements. Remember that quality is more important than quantity – focus on including the most impactful and relevant information rather than trying to fill space.

What's the Best Format for a Manual Tester Resume?

  • Your understanding of the software development lifecycle
  • Your adaptability to different testing environments and challenges

Tailor your resume to highlight these aspects, providing specific examples and quantifiable results whenever possible to showcase your value as a manual tester.

Manual Tester vs QA Engineer

Manual tester and QA engineer overlap, but the resumes should not read the same. A manual tester leads with test design, exploratory testing, and defects caught by hand; a QA engineer leads with automation frameworks and code. If your target roles lean toward automation and scripting, borrow from our QA engineer resume examples and put the frameworks first. For manual QA, keep the test process and the defects you found in the top third of the page.

Get Your Manual Tester Resume Past the Screeners

Most manual tester resumes are read by an applicant tracking system before a person sees them. Match the exact skill wording from the posting, manual testing, test cases, regression, Jira, not clever synonyms, and keep the layout to a single column with standard headers. Run the job description and your resume through our keyword scanner to see the gaps, then close them with the resume tailor before you apply.

Turn a Weak Manual Testing Bullet Into a Strong One

The difference between a bullet that gets read and one that gets skipped is a number and a defect. Here is the same work, written two ways.

Weak

• Responsible for testing the application and reporting bugs • Worked with the development team on quality • Executed test cases for various features

Strong

• Ran 300+ manual test cases per release across web and mobile, catching a payments defect before a launch that would have hit 12,000 users • Cut regression cycle time 25% by prioritizing a risk-based suite with the dev team • Logged and tracked 400+ defects in Jira, driving the escape rate below 2%

The strong version names the count, the tool, and the outcome. The weak one could belong to anyone.

Manual Tester Resume FAQ

How long should a manual tester resume be?

One page is plenty early on. Once you have several years and multiple domains, two pages is fine, and our data shows two-page resumes perform as well or better across levels. Fill the space with defects caught and releases protected, not filler.

Do I need ISTQB or other certifications?

They help, especially when your degree is in another field. ISTQB Foundation shows up across the postings we read and credentials the fundamentals. Advanced and Agile Tester certs matter more as you move up. List them in their own section with the year.

How do I write a manual tester resume with no experience?

Lead with projects and process. A tester who has written test cases for a personal app, filed clear bug reports, and joined a beta program has shown the core skill. Name the tools, the test types, and any ISTQB study, and keep a short summary that states the pivot plainly.

Should a manual tester resume mention automation?

Name it if you have touched it, Selenium, Postman, a bit of Python, because 3,058 of the postings we read pair automation with manual work. Do not overstate it. A manual tester who can read a script and knows where automation fits is more hireable than one who claims a framework they have not built.

Methodology

The two examples at the top of this page are verified. They are composites of the QA and manual tester resumes in Huntr's database that reached the interview stage, at companies including Pearson, Robert Half, Datavant, and SWORD Health. We built resumes that mirror what those resumes shared: the summary shape, the metric density, the section order, and the skills. Names, employers, and schools are swapped for comparable real companies and institutions, checked against the data so no example points at a real person, and every figure is nudged from a real number a source resume showed.

The illustrative examples are not tied to specific interviews. We build them from the same interview-stage patterns and from the skills named across 6,397 live manual testing postings, so each one shows what works for a level or specialty. The real interview companies named in the verified callouts, Pearson, Robert Half, and Datavant, appear as they do in the data and are never swapped.

Conclusion

The manual testers whose resumes reached interviews had one thing in common: they showed what they caught. They led with a number, made any pivot into QA read as obvious, and tied every bullet to a defect, a release, or a test cycle they owned. Do that, match the posting's exact skill wording, and keep the process in the top third of the page. To build yours, start with the resume builder and tailor it to each job with the resume tailor before you apply.
