The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences has an opening for a Temporary Research Project Manager.
This position will serve as Project Manager for a new tropical forest restoration project on Tinian, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. This project is supported by the Department of the Navy. We are evaluating and demonstrating techniques for restoring degraded tropical forest ecosystems. The project will have implications for the ecological management of the Tinian Military Lease Area (MLA) and similar habitats in the region.
Location:
We prefer the project manager to be based on Tinian, though it is also possible for them to be based on Saipan with regular trips to Tinian. These details will be negotiated with the project PI, Dr. Jon Bakker.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Collect field vegetation and wildlife data (30%): Organize and lead fieldwork for project. This individual will collect data independently at times and as the lead of a small crew at other times. Data include camera traps and acoustic recorder units to assess animal use of sites, plant species composition, and survival and growth of transplanted plants.
• Help develop and implement forest restoration site plans and monitoring plans (20%): This project requires restoration site plans and monitoring plans. Assist PI with preparation of these plans by reviewing literature, organizing data, creating tables and figures, drafting document text, editing document text, etc. Implement activities identified in plans – controlling vegetation, installing plants, measuring plant growth, etc.
• Maintain project data (20%): Enter project-related data into spreadsheets, conduct QC/QA queries to flag data entry errors, resolve data entry errors, import data into relational database, use R to organize and summarize data for use in publications and presentations.
• Project communication (20%): This individual will contribute to monthly reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and presentations. Some products will be drafted by this individual and reviewed and edited by the PI and others on the project team, and some products will be edited by the PI and others on the project team and reviewed and edited by this individual.
• Represent UW in meetings with local and regional collaborators (10%): This individual will participate in meetings with local collaborators (e.g., staff from Department of Lands and Natural Resources who are propagating plants for project on Tinian) and regional collaborators (e.g., employees at Navy base on Saipan – project sponsor). Meetings will be held regularly to ensure that all involved understand the goals and timelines for the project. The PI will participate virtually but this individual will be available to meet in person.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology or related field and two years of experience in plant ecology or ecological restoration OR equivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
• Training in restoration ecology
• Demonstrated ability to manage and analyze data in R or Python
• Demonstrated ability to work with management agencies
• Experience working in tropical forest ecosystems
