The Center for Education, Data and Research (CEDR) at the UW School of Social Work seeks to hire a Research Scientist. CEDR’s mission is to conduct high quality independent research that advances the state of knowledge in education and aids policymakers in decision-making to improve educational outcomes for all students. The ultimate goal is to help move the education enterprise toward being a continuously evolving system where learning from policy variation and adjusting policies based on what is learned is the norm, not the exception. The Research Scientist will work on several different research projects that will change throughout the course of the researcher's employment. Currently, the researcher will work on projects that explore the efficacy of education practices, labor market policies, and teacher training initiatives.
The successful candidate is capable of working independently and without direction on assigned tasks/projects. They will maintain databases from national, state, and local education institutions such as the Washington State Department of Education, the North Carolina Education Resource Center, the National Department of Education, Seattle Public Schools, as well as other organizations like the Washington Department of Corrections. The successful candidate must be able to analyze these data and prepare results for publications and presentations for both general audiences in the education community and for academic education researchers. Complex tasks will include supervising research assistants and consultants as they assist the researcher in data cleaning and coding. They will help oversee a team of researchers and research assistants who will be performing data analysis and who will report to him or her periodically with updated progress. He or she will set project goals and deadlines, assign tasks, assess the work completed, and integrate the results to meet project goals.
Responsibilities will include identifying and defining research problems relevant to CEDR’s work; Analyzing results; Developing conclusions; Presenting research results in publishable form; Supporting on the development of proposals to obtain research grants.
This position will help ensure deliverables are produced in accordance with timelines set forth in grant and funding agreements. This position will help advance UW’s research community goals and commitments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Apply scientific knowledge gained through least a Master’s in Economics, Statistics, Sociology (or similar social science field).
  • Lead activities that support data collection and analysis for relevant research project(s) (20%).
  • Utilize statistical analyses and methods to investigate a range of PK-12, post secondary, and workforce issues, develop and interpret results from this research, and assist with the production of publications communicating these findings to a range of audiences (40%).
  • Perform complex queries from large information sets to support data analysis (20%).
  • Assist with development of proposal material to support CEDR's acquisition of grant funded projects (20%).
  • May supervise 1-5 research, academic, and support staff.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's Degree in Economics, Statistics, Sociology, or related social science field.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience to include:
    - Performing econometric and statistical analysis
    - Working with large quantitative datasets, using STATA, SAS, and R
    - Working with school districts, state education agencies, universities, and other data depositories to obtain data and perform research
    - Able to synthesize results and work independently and in teams
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Washington State, North Carolina, and Massachusetts education data.
  • Proficiency in STATA, R, and SAS.
