DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research, and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The department now employs 1400 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center (ranked among the top medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report), Harborview Medical Center (the region's only Level I Trauma center, known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD CARER, and mentally- and medically- vulnerable populations.), and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide in-depth knowledge and experience in the performance of clinical testing in the Laboratory, such as in routine coagulation, special coagulation, automated cell counts, hemoglobin abnormalities, differential/morphology, manual cell counts, bone marrows, circulating tumor cells, red cell disorder testing, information processing, quality control.
Monitor and evaluate daily quality control statistics and make judgements concerning accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory method. Act as a resource to Medical Laboratory Scientist I’s regarding quality control issues.
Exercise expertise in operating, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and performing corrective maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment, including sophisticated computerized instruments requiring interpretative knowledge (such as multi-parameter electronic cell counters and automated coagulation analyzers) without supervision.
Have an advanced understanding of the theory and physiological importance of each test. Correlate abnormal results with pathologic and physiologic states to determine validity and reasonableness of data. Identify the technical, instrumental or physiologic cause of problems (such as patient variables or interfering substances).
Serve as a resource for other technologist or medical personnel in investigating problems involving specimen collection or handling, critical values, or abnormal or unusual results. Document actions and findings as necessary.
Schedule and instruct new employees, medical laboratory science students and other students. Prepare teaching materials for training, and provide written evaluations on students. Counsel and provide feedback to students when necessary.
Assist in competency assessment activities for other employees.
Assist lead technologist in monitoring workflow within the laboratory; assist in distributing resources to meet the needs of the laboratory.
Inventory laboratory reagents and consumable items; submit supply orders for approval.
Exhibit strong knowledge of laboratory information system software, and utilize statistical software.
Assist in development and/or evaluation of new procedures and instruments as assigned.
Perform duties of Medical Laboratory Scientist 1.
Perform administrative duties, special projects and related duties as required.
Perform all analysis of blood, body fluids, cells and products with accuracy and precision. Work with attention to detail and with critical review to avoid errors.
Handle heavy workloads and meet test completion deadlines through efficient workload organization.
Display flexibility in adapting to new routines and modifications of work assignments.
Ensure attendance and punctuality meets acceptable requirements. Respond to emergency calls and share overtime and call back responsibilities. May be required to work weekends and holidays.
Maintain competency in all areas, including age-specific competency, knowledge of current procedure revisions, etc.
Use effective time management.
Use resources appropriately – including supplies, instruments and equipment.
Maintain a clean and efficient work area by cleaning benches and equipment and replenishing supplies.
Be aware of compliance and billing issues and follow acceptable practice. Report any observed or suspected compliance violations to area supervisor or department compliance officer.
Maintain a neat and clean appearance and dress according to the laboratory dress code.
Continue education through departmental seminars, journal reading, workshops, etc.
Attend staff meetings and required training as requested.
Demonstrate consideration of patients rights and maintain complete confidentiality of all medical, financial, computers, conversations or other sensitive materials which may jeopardize the privacy of others; use minimum necessary patient identifiable information and only to perform job responsibilities.
May be required to perform venipunctures.
May be required to prepare and process samples for transport and/or testing
REQUIREMENTS:
A bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a curriculum accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association AND certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologist or equivalent
OR
A certification in the specialized field appropriate to the laboratory division
AND
Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist I or equivalent. An equivalent degree in a field such as chemistry or microbiology substitute for the Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
